Only twenty five percent said that they were prepared to put in the extra time and money to keep their locks looking good during the winter months.

Andrew Collinge stated: “Its interesting half of those surveyed can only spare 10 minutes to style their hair during winter, especially with the stresses of the season, but it doesn’t have to be this way. This has been reflected by three schools in Scotland, which have brought in hair straightening irons in order to encourage girls to take part in sports and physical educations. The hair straightening irons have been brought in by three schools in West Dunbartonshire, and they were introduced by the local council because girls were worried about having bad hair after taking part in sports classes and physical education.

In total nine sets of straightening irons have been placed at the three schools, with a total cost of £800. The council said that the iron were part of a range of measures to try and improve PE facilities at the schools, which are St Peter the Apostle, Clydebank High and Vale of Leven Academy.

An official from the council stated: “West Dunbartonshire Council has installed nine sets of hair straighteners within the changing facilities at each of the council’s three new flagship schools. The council considers the views of pupils to be critical in ensuring that the school environment is as positive and inclusive as possible and pupils were widely consulted during the design phase. The falling rate of female participation in sport was a key issue discussed by pupils and improvements to changing and showering facilities, including the installation of hair straighteners, was considered important in reversing this trend.”

One official said: “Smugglers are only out to make a profit by cheating British taxpayers and undercutting honest local traders. People who are tempted to buy these cheap copies don’t realise that the profits made by smugglers are often ploughed straight back into other criminal activities such as drug smuggling. Our officers will continue to root out those criminals who attempt to smuggle goods illegally into the UK. We are disrupting this illegal trade and bringing those responsible before the courts. Many people enjoy finding a bargain but counterfeit goods which end up in markets, car boot sales and discount stores are just the tip of the criminal iceberg. Quite simply, if something appears too good to be true, it is.”
